Overall Comments

Thanks for submitting the assignment Stephen.

The assignment requires students to create a series of images that allows the written word to play a part in their overall consideration.

The key issues I mentioned within my last feedback report were as follows:

  • Try to establish a connection between the practitioners you have researched and your own work, through the written supporting texts, rather than relying solely on Pintrest links.
  • Try to ensure all links on the blog are active and lead to something of use for the module, for when it comes to assessment.
  • Broaden your research sources to include additional materials from more books, journals, essays etc … as opposed to just using on-line sources.
  • Proofread all posts and remove all typo’s.
  • Try to use in text citation within the written component of the submissions.
  • Respond to Bate’s publication via the blog.


I can see that some of the feedback points are being addressed through the blog, but I think it will be more beneficial to assessment outcomes, if these are addressed more comprehensively.

Feedback on assignment

Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Quality of Outcome, Demonstration of Creativity

  • I found these images to be a really interesting response to the brief and a real departure from earlier work submitted for assignments. The act of physically burning a photograph has been described by Barthes as one of the most ‘violent’ of acts, which can also be considered very final.  The fact you have used this as a method to indicate the removal of an element or component of the image is quite intriguing and could certainly be contextualized at length.
  • I was also interested in reading within your critical analysis about the term ‘triggers for memory’ being used by Lamia in relation to objects and places.  Of course one of the most obvious trigger for memory is the photograph itself, but it should be understood in that sense, the memory is something that happens in the present, being triggered by something (like a photo) from the past.  So you just need to be clear, these object / places / photographs are not the ‘memory’ itself.
  • The work immediately made me think of Mishka Henner’s 2013 work entitled ‘Less Amercains’, which was created in response to Robert Frank’s important photographic book ‘The Americans’ (it was first released in France … thus was entitled ‘Les Americains’).  Henner’s work will have plenty written about it and would therefore be useful in terms of trying to understand how your work sits within this field. The link for the work has been included below.
  • It was also interesting to note that the text you decided to work with was one you had written yourself.  Although I thought this did work well with the imagery in almost literally describing what was happening in the work, it might also have been interesting to have sourced other texts that do a similar thing, but have been written by others.  I’m certain there are plenty of these out there. if you dig around deep enough.
  • It might be worth considering how this work could be engaged with by spectators now.  This would offer the opportunity to explore different presentation methods and strategies for the work.

  • Again, this is progressing as evidenced through the blog. But as I’ve mentioned continuously, an exercise needs to be conducted in order to proof read texts that have been posted. I’m constantly finding basic typo’s and also more alarmingly names being incorrectly spelt (Bathes rather than Barthes etc).  This would be a simple exercise to conduct and would give the submission much more academic weight once submitted for assessment.
  • In addition to this, I would probably consider trying to include more writing about the individual exercises and project. This is your opportunity to really try to demonstrate the breadth and depth of your research and reading etc.
  • I did note some in text citation happening here which was great to see.


Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis  

  • As previously mentioned, the sources you draw from with regards to the research need to be extended. I see that you have included many relevant texts which sit behind the ‘Book Reviews’ section of the blog, but the entries are predominantly descriptions of contents etc.  You need to be able to demonstrate what has been specifically learnt from reading these texts, perhaps using the odd quote here or there in relation to a specific point or argument you are trying to enforce.

  • The ‘Photographers / Practitioners’ section of the blog is now progressing and including many worthy candidates for further scrutiny and analysis.  I did note that the bottom of this section just contains names of photographers though, but I’m assuming this is also work in progress.
